Midwesterners love calling something a salad that isn't a salad. But to be fair to us, the definition of salad is pretty loose here. It's basically anything that is served cold in a bowl during a Memorial Day barbecue. Bonus points if it has mayonnaise or marshmallow fluff. Minus points if it has lettuce in it. It's because we get creative over in this region. Sometimes we lack stuff to do so we have to innovate in other ways. 

We may not have the flashing lights of the coasts but what we do have is a lot of time to chop up Snickers and come up with ways to transform them. And that's an equally important cultural contribution as anything that has ever come out of Los Angeles. You can't eat Hollywood with a plastic fork on a paper plate nestled on your knees. But you can do that with Aunt Carol's potato salad.
